<hi style=afpcap>Having been one of the primary heavy bombers in the Pacific theatre of operations during World War Two, the B-29 was flown extensively five years later to bomb targets in North Korea. The design lead directly to the B-50 and a long line of highly successful multi-engined aircraft both civilian and military. The B-29 was comparatively slow and was soon relegated obsolete when the new jet engined bombers began entering service. Many were retired for storage while others became targets on gunnery ranges or were the subject of explosive tests. Some escaped this sad end as they were converted to KB-29 tankers with the Boeing developed air refuelling 'flying boom' system. 116 were converted to KB-29P standard with the first joining Strategic Air Command in March 1950 and remaining in service until at least 1960. </hi>
